When you set up your BYTT profile we collect your first name and email address, and whether you agreed to receive occasional updates. We email you a code to confirm the address is yours, and only a confirmed address is stored. We store that profile securely so we can support your access and contact you about the app. We never store your messages, rewrites, Vault entries, no-contact reasons or recordings.
Your message drafts, rewrites, voice recordings, transcripts, no-contact profiles and reasons, unsent letters and Vault entries stay on this device. None of that is ever added to our contact list.
iCloud Backup is off unless you turn it on. When it is on, BYTT copies text only — Vault entries and no-contact profiles — to your own private iCloud, so you can restore them on another iPhone you own. That data goes to your personal iCloud account, not to us: we cannot read it. Voice recordings and audio are never uploaded and stay only on the device that made them, so a restored phone shows the text without the recording. Your PIN is never backed up. You can turn it off at any time, and Settings lets you delete the iCloud copy as well as the one on this device.
When you ask for a rewrite, your message and the choices you make about it are sent securely to our service, which passes them to OpenAI to produce the reflection and rewrite options. We send them with retention switched off, so OpenAI does not keep your message or use it to train their models. Nothing is sent until you ask for a rewrite, and your Vault and history are never included.
Before you subscribe you can try one rewrite. If you write your own message it is sent and returned exactly as above, and neither the message nor its rewrite is stored. So that the preview is offered once, we keep a record containing only a scrambled form of your email address, a random identifier for your app installation, and the date. It holds no message text of any kind and is deleted after 180 days.
You can opt out of updates at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us. Opting out does not affect your access to the app.
Settings can remove everything stored on this device. If iCloud Backup is on, you are asked whether to delete the device copy only or the iCloud copy as well, so a backup is never destroyed by accident and never left behind unknowingly. Either way that does not remove your name and email from our contact list — email us and we will delete it.
BYTT is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
If this policy changes we will update this page and the date above. Continuing to use BYTT after a change means the updated policy applies.
